Protein is necessary for muscle, tissues and many body functions. Protein metabolism also creates waste that kidneys help remove, so some people with CKD may be advised to moderate intake.

More is not always better—and less is not always safer

Too little protein can contribute to poor nutrition. People receiving dialysis often need more protein than people with CKD who are not on dialysis because treatment can remove protein.
