There is no single “kidney diet” for everyone with CKD. Food needs can change with CKD stage, lab results, blood pressure, diabetes, dialysis, medicines, appetite and other factors.

Four nutrients you will hear about

Sodium can affect fluid retention and blood pressure. Potassium may need adjustment when blood levels are outside the desired range. Phosphorus can build up as kidney function declines. Protein needs require balance and can differ substantially for people on dialysis.

A better starting point
